The government will rework the renewable purchase obligation mechanism and allow States greater flexibility in opting for renewable energy, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Coal, Power, Renewable Energy and Mines, Piyush Goyal said.
Speaking at the power purchase agreement signing ceremony for the first wind auction scheme, “It’s time we do away with the distinction between solar and non-solar renewable purchase obligation. State governments should be allowed the choose the form of renewable energy they prefer,”
Goyal said that this will allow States government-run power distribution companies to opt for cheaper clean power.
He also said that bidding is currently underway for 2,800 MW of power projects for the second round of wind energy auctions.
At the event, Mytrah Energy, Inox Wind, Ostro Kutch Wind Pvt Ltd, Adani Green Energy and Green Infra signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with public sector undertaking PTC India. The developers have committed to supply 1050 MW of wind power for ₹3.46 per unit through an inter-state transmission system.
An official statement said that PTC India would sell 449.9 MW of this power to Uttar Pradesh, 200 MW to Bihar, 200 MW to Jharkhand, 100 MW to Delhi, 50 MW to Assam and 50 MW to Odisha for meeting their Non-Solar Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO). The wind power projects under first wind auction are likely to be commissioned by September 2018.
