The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to create a joint venture company to put up a 100 MW offshore wind power project off the coast of Gujarat.
The MoU was signed between MNRE, National Institute of Wind Energy, and consortium of partners consisting of NTPC, Power Grid Corporation, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency, Power Finance Corporation, Power Trading Corporation and Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd. NTPC will be the lead partner in the consortium.
“Considering the country’s 7,600-km coast-line, opportunities for scaling up offshore wind power projects are humongous,” Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy said in an official statement.
The Minister also suggested building partnerships with the Defence, Coast Guard and shipping companies to ensure a seamless and time-bound approval process.
The joint venture company will undertake a detailed feasibility study to set up the first planned demonstration of the offshore wind project.
It has been proposed to provide subsidy for the setting up of infrastructure for evacuation and transmission of power from the project site to the mainland. This will include financial support to carry out studies such as wind resource assessment, environment impact assessment and oceanographic surveys.
