Saurabh Chandra, Secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, will be the new Oil Secretary. He will replace Vivek Rae who is retiring on February 28.
The file for appointment of new Petroleum & Natural Secretary has been signed by the concerned authorities including the Prime Minister and now a formal order is expected any time.
Chandra is a 1978 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. He was Additional Secretary with the Commerce and Industries Ministry before being appointed as Secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion on April 17, 2012. Chandra will have a stint of more than a year.
He is coming to the Petroleum Ministry at a time, when two key policy initiatives are to be unveiled – revision of natural gas pricing and new round oil and gas block auctions.
As DIPP Secretary, he played a key role in overhauling foreign direct investment policy including opening up of multi brand retail trade and allowing foreign airlines to pick up equity in domestic airlines.
In another shift, Private Secretary to the Prime Minister Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi will move to the International Monetary Fund, Washington.
