Beneficiaries and customers will be able to transact with the Government over their mobile phones soon with the Tamil Nadu Government planning to develop a mobile Government payment gateway.

This is among the e-Governance initiatives, which the State Government is set to outline with a policy that will bring the government – not government offices – closer to the citizens. The State portal will be made mobile compliant.

According to the policy note of the IT Department tabled in the Assembly today, the State Government hopes to exploit the opportunity provided by the high mobile phone penetration by making the cell phones as a delivery platform for a range of services.

These would cover mobile payments, fees for government services, operation of bank accounts and micro credit. Government services including submission of e-Governance applications, grievance redressal, disaster management and location based services including route information, crime detection would be enabled.

The State Government will work with the National eGovernance Division to develop a mobile payment gateway.

Thrust areas in e-Governance include enhancing delivery of e-Services using cloud computing, migrating to Internet Protocl Version 6 in line with the policy of the Government of India, data warehousing and data mining for analysis of the huge data base available using business intelligence software to help planners, economists and businesses, integrated financial management and using Geographical Information System for planning and monitoring processes in the districts.

Tamil Nadu is also planning to implement the e-Security policy and e-Waste policy that are in place. It is also planning to restructure the rural Business Process Outsourcing policy to encourage entrepreneurs to set up centres in rural areas.
