The Finance Ministry has imposed safeguard duty on sodium citrate imports into India.
Sodium citrate is a chemical compound that is used in cough syrups, jellies, cheese, soft drinks and beverages. It also finds application in pharmaceutical and photographic industry.
For the period from December 31, 2014 to December 30, 2015, the revenue department has imposed safeguard duty of 30 per cent.
All sodium citrate imports between December 31, 2015 and December 30, 2016 will attract safeguard duty of 20 per cent.
In the case of sodium citrate imports between December 31, 2016 and December 30, 2017, the revenue department has imposed safeguard duty of 10 per cent.
The petition seeking imposition of safeguard duty on sodium citrate imports into India was filed by Posy Pharmachem Pvt Ltd, Gujarat. The application was supported by Sunil Chemicals.
