The water storage position in Ganga, Narmada, Tapi, Mahi, Indus Sabarmati Godavari and Mahanadi and East flowing river basins is better than the average of the last 10 years, according to the Water Resources Ministry.
The Central Water Commission (CWC), which is monitoring the water storage position of 84 important reservoirs in the country, said 37 reservoirs had significant hydro-power benefits with installed capacities of over 60 MW each, up to March 25.
It said the West flowing rivers of the South basins were close to normal whereas the rivers of Kutch, Krishna and Cauvery and neighbouring basins were deficient.
Of the 37 reservoirs with significant hydro potential, 13 had storage build-up of less than or equal to the average of last 10 years, it added.
The Commission, which takes stock of the reservoir position before the monsoons set in, said the present storage was 99 per cent of last year’s storage and 119 per cent of the last 10 years average storage during the same period.
“To derive the best possible benefits from the available water, the CWC is keeping in touch with the Department of Agriculture and Co-operation and providing information of the weekly storage position to the Crop Weather Watch Group for evolving suitable crop strategies,” the Ministry said.
