The Embassy of Suriname has opened its consulate in Bangalore.
The consulate's primary task will be to provide assistance to Suriname nationals, Indians travelling to Suriname to visit families and cultural groups.
Suriname is a country with 37 per cent Indian population and was a Dutch colony till 1975. The country is surrounded by Brazil to the South and Atlantic sea to the North. Many Indian diaspora speaks Dutch and Indian festivals are celebrated with great pomp and splendour.
Suriname's Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Lackin issued the commission of appointment to open the consulate and the Ministry of External Effairs in India has conveyed the concurrence of the government.
The country has appointed Asif Iqbal as its honorary Consul of Suriname for South India.
Winston Lackin has also announced the appointment of Asif Iqbal as the honorary Consul of Republic of Suriname. His appointment has been made with consular jurisdiction over the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Asif Iqbal is the Executive Director of the Latin American Caribbean Federation of India and the President of the Defence Technology Infrastructure Society of India.
Iqbal work will revolve around strengthening the educational, scientific, cultural and economic ties between the two countries.
