The United Nations Global Compact Office has brought together a group of global experts to develop a white paper on Sustainable Agriculture Business Principles (SABP).

The group will advance the positive impact business can have in meeting global changes of food security and sustainable agriculture.

Growing demand

With the world’s population expected to grow by 30 per cent to nine billion by 2050, the demands on agriculture will continue to grow.

The UN sees a critical role for business to play in offering practical solutions to meet the challenges of food security.

The white paper ( >http://goo.gl/vstLeR ) suggests how the SABPs will guide all businesses involved in agriculture value chains — including production, processing, trading, manufacturing, distribution and retailing.

The Principles will provide a framework for better practice and more effective partnerships between companies and governments.

The United Nations Global Compact invites stakeholders who can influence, or are impacted by, business practices and government policies in agriculture, to comment before November 15 on the white paper through an online questionnaire ( >http://goo.gl/0IGa0D )

Broad network

A broad network of global leaders across industry, the United Nations and civil society have committed to leverage such collective expertise and engage others in the development and delivery of new business principles for a more sustainable world.

Any input provided online will be taken into account when the SABPs are finally drafted later this year.
