There is a craze now in India for developing “greater cities and towns” such as “Greater Hyderabad” or “Greater Visakhapatnam” or “Greater Vijayawada” and it is quite baffling and in defiance of all economic logic, according to Visakhapatnam Port Chairman Ajeya Kallam.

He was speaking here on Saturday at a regional economic summit organised by a city-based forum of intellectuals, Gravity 2.0.

He said planners and others involved in the development process should focus on the optimum size of a city or town depending on the resources available in the vicinity instead of formulating and implementing grandiose plans for greater cities. The Government should also formulate clear-cut policies for use of natural resources such as land, water, and air. That would eliminate many needless conflicts, he said.

There was a need for groups such as Gravity 2.0 to work on these challenges and to assist the Government in the development process. Gopi Kumar Bulusu, Founder-Member of Gravity 2.0, spoke about the immense potential of the Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam region and ways to develop the region into one of the most prosperous in the country in the coming years. Several local entrepreneurs and executives of companies spoke along the same lines. A 2017 vision statement for the region was drafted based on the inputs.
