Monitoring networks

Network management involves a host of tasks, but many of these can be simplified using this week's pick of software. Some of the programs are freeware.

EMCO Network Management

EMCO Network Management is a network deployment tool to install, remove or configure applications on remote computers within a LAN. It offers a built-in Macro Scripter to create script files with over 60 functions to choose from as well as schedule management, auto-install of remote services and more. Available actions include options to merge registry files, run processes, lock workstations, fetch log data and more. The group of target computers can be filtered based on information that was gathered from the remote computers, including operating system, service packs, applications or any custom-created information.

VisualRoute

Visual Route is a graphical traceroute, ping and whois utility that analyses Internet connectivity problems. Analysis results are presented in plain English and traceroute results are displayed in a table and world map. VisualRoute processes all IP hops in parallel, and also supports loose source route (LSRR) information for advanced debugging. VisualRoute Server may be installed on a server outside a firewall, giving users inside the firewall the ability to see traceroute information. Additional features include a colour map with zoom capability, support for hex-encoded IP addresses, easy addition of new hosts to database, browser integration and more.

NTPower
