Getting CMOS settings right

When I switch on my system, the following message is displayed: "CMOS setting Wrong Press F1 to run set up Press F2 to load default values and continue". When I press F2, it loads Windows 98 and then shows the message, "Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer. You can safely attach a serial mouse now", and the system hangs. I have already changed the CMOS battery and scanned the system for viruses, but the problem persists. Please suggest a solution.-- T.J. Joy

Please try the following one by one:

  • Remove the mouse from the COM port and start the system and see if the system hangs;

  • Start the system in "Safe Mode" by pressing the Ctrl key. When the system starts, choose safe mode. When the system starts in safe mode, go to control panel and double click on the `System' icon. Now click on the second tab `Devices' and in the list of devices displayed, click the `+' sign near the Mouse device and remove the installed mouse. Similarly click the `+' sign near the `Ports' device and remove the COM1 and COM2 devices. Restart the system. The COM ports and the mouse will be reinstalled.

  • If you have added any new devices of late, remove it and try. If you have installed any software relating to COM port or modem, remove it and repeat step 2.
