Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Boot-up error
I have XP, 98 & Linux on my computer. Recently there have been some problems. After boot up, XP gets stuck. Also, whenever a window is opened, it shows the following message: "Iexplore-performed an illegal operation, will be shut down". Also sometimes, the computer automatically boots up while working. So I reinstalled everything, but in vain. I changed the properties of "sound recorder" sometime ago. Could this problem be because of that?-- Priya
Start XP in safe mode, right click on `My computer' in the start menu and click Manage. This will bring up the Computer Management. Then select Device manager on the left panel. On the right panel, you will have a list of all the devices installed. Please select `Sound, video and game contorlles', click on the `+' sign near it to expand the selection. Disable your sound card by right clicking on it and selecting disable, or remove the device entirely (you can also remove the sound card from the system. It is an add-on card, which is plugged into your PCI or ISA slots on the motherboard). Now restart XP and see if you have the same problem that you faced earlier. If the system is fine, then the sound card is the culprit. Do a fresh reinstallation of the driver by removing it and restarting the system and then install the driver again. You can also try changing your memory. If you have a standby memory, test the system with it or if you have your memory installed as two modules, then please try testing the system with a single module to find if any of the memory modules are defective.
