Looking up domains

This week's pick of software helps you locate details and status of domain names, such as, owner and geographical location. Some of them help you determine if a domain name is available. All tools are freeware, unless specified.

ADVwhois

ADVwhois is a small and simple Whois client that runs in the system, allowing you to look up the owner of a particular IP address or resolvable Internet domain, as well as the geographical location.

The program does not return information on the domain owner, but on the owner of the IP block that is providing service on the domain. This makes it more useful for geographical reference or spam tracing.

To make proper use of this software you should know the difference between IP block ownership and domain name ownership, or otherwise use a regular Whois tool. A command line version of the software is also available.
