Access denial

I seem to be having a problem with my Windows NT server. When I click `Services and Devices' in the control panel, the succeeding window opens without any problem, but I cannot change any of the services.

If I try to start or stop any service, the following message appears `Access Denied. The service database is locked'. This happens not only with the services but also with the devices. Apart from this, in `Network Neighbourhood' I can see only installed services, but if I try to check out their properties the same message appears. Please tell me how I sort out this issue. - Chandra

The reason for this could possibly be that the `Service control Manager' has locked the service database, as one or more services may not have been started properly. This may happen due to improper termination (sudden system failure) of programs which involve installation/start/stop of service, or due to improper service parameters.

You can run the winmsd.exe diagnostic utility and try identifying that particular problematic service. Then you can disable the service using the registry editor. If, however, you are not able to identify the problem causing service, you can try disabling all unwanted services and then check if the problem is solved.

Here is how you can disable the services using the regedit:

Run Regedit32.exe go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\service name\Start,

On the right pane of the Registry Editor window, double-click the registry value `Start' and change the value to 0x4. This will disable the service.
