Erasing temporary files

Please tell me how I erase temporary files from the hard disk.

P.S. Hariharan

We can classify temporary files into two types — system-related temporary files and Internet-related temporary files. You can delete these temp files manually or automatically, or using some third-party utilities. You can manually delete temporary files from your hard disk. For this, you must run the Windows find (start - search - for files or folders) and delete them. You can delete the following types of files. *.TMP, *.OLD, *.PRV, *.-, *.000, *.001, *.002, *.BAK, *.LOG, *.$$$, *.chk. But do watch out for what you are deleting. Before doing this, please make sure you have enabled the option `show hidden files and folders'.

To get this open, please go to My computer - Tools - Folder Options and Select View tab. Here, please select `show hidden files and folders' under hidden files and folders. A simple and easy way to delete these temporary files is by using the Disk Cleanup wizard. This is available in Windows 98/Me/2000/XP (except Windows 95). To access this, please select start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup or simply type cleanmgr at start in the dialog box. Disk Cleanup searches your drive, and then shows you temporary files, Internet cache files, Recycle Bin files and unnecessary program files that you can safely delete. You can direct Disk Cleanup to delete some or all of those files.

Third-party utilities are available to delete these temp files offers more flexibility than disk cleanup. Some of the freeware utilities are Internet Organizer Pro 2.1- 3.03MB at this URL: http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-2381-10068927.html
