Solutions and tips

I have a 10 GB hard disk with 64 MB SD RAM with P-III installed.

The hard disk functions well, except that when I start my computer, it displays the following error messages: "1720-hard disk detected immetint failure" and "Disk control failure" and it gives the options at the bottom such as F1 - BOOT, F10 - COMPUTER SETUP. If I press F1 my computer starts.

Even after a thorough check by my hardware engineer, the problem still persists. Please suggest a solution. Also, please tell me how to install Windows-XP on my hard disk.

  • I would also like you to please suggest software whereby I can download songs off the Internet.

  • My brother has a computer which has a 40 GB, 256 MD SD RAM capacity. He would like to install two operating systems in it — 20GB for Win 98 and 20GB for Win XP. Please suggest a way as to how this can be done.

For your first problem, the solution would be to replace the Mother board battery, as it must be weak and that is why it is unable to memorise the BIOS settings.

Once the battery is replaced, please set the default to your BIOS settings.

The answer to your second question is that you can download songs only from sites where the download facility is available.

There is usually a link pointing to an .mp3 file. All you need to do is right click on the link and select `Save Target as' to save the file. However, most sites do not provide this facility, so you will need to use some third party utilities which will record the song you are listening to.

One such software is "Messer". Please download it from the following URL: http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/gmm/fwaudiorecorder.html.

Install the software, and in its settings select the line out of your sound card as input, then play the songs from your favourite sites and use this utility to record it parallel.

For your dual boot system, please partition the hard disk in the following manner: 10 X 4 (C, D, E and F) and have Win98 installed in c:\ and all the programs relating to it in d:\.

Next, please install XP in E: and all the programs relating to it in F:\. This will have the two systems installed separately without conflict with one another.
