Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Different file formats
Please let me know what is meant by .doc/.rtf format and whether there is an MS application for it. I would also like information on a Web site from where I can download PDF programmes. P.S. Hariharan The .doc and .rtf are two different file formats in which you can save typed documents in Windows. The .rtf format is "Rich Text Format" in which you can store pictures, text colour and formatting. You do not need any additional MS application for this. Instead, you can use the WordPad utility that comes as default with the OS. You will normally find the WordPad at Start -{gt} Programs -{gt} Accessories. The .doc format, on the other hand, is the MS Word format. To store files in this format, you will require a separate application called MS Word. The .doc format has better formatting facilities than the rich text format. Regarding the PDF programme, you can download the PDF reader, which is free. Please log onto http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/ readstep2.html, where you will find the PDF reader. This can be used to read .pdf documents.
