Shutdown hitch

I have a P3, 733 MHz system with 128MB SDRAM. Recently, I formatted my C drive and reinstalled Windows98 Second Edition. Ever since I've been facing these problems: When I shut down my computer, the system restarts again. It does not shut down. I get the message: "It's safe to shut down your computer." After reinstalling Windows there is no sound. I tried installing various audio drivers but in vain. Please suggest a solution. - R. Prashanth

To solve the shutdown problem, please follow these steps. The shutdown problem may be due to an incompatible device driver, so it's better to first disable the sound card driver. To do this, click Start - Settings - control panel - double click System - click Device Manager - double click the "Sound, Video, And Game Controllers" to expand it. Double click your sound card, and then click the General tab. click the "Original Configuration", check box to clear it. If you do not have an Original Configuration check box, please click the "Disable In This Hardware Profile" check box to select it. Click ok. You will now see a red X next to the sound card. Please restart your computer. After you restart the machine, try and shut it down again. Next, please disable Fast Shutdown in Windows 98 and see if this solves your problem. There are two ways to achieve this. One way is install Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown patch (502KB) which you can download from the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/ wurecommended/s_wufeatured/win98se/. The other way is click start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Information. On the Tools menu, please click System Configuration Utility. On the General tab click Advanced. Click to select the "Disable Fast Shutdown" check box, click ok and then click ok. Click yes when you are prompted to restart your computer. This changes the Fast Reboot value data from 1 to 0 in the following registry key KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\ Control\Shutdown.

The next option is to disable "PCI bus IRQ Steering" and check if doing so solves your problem. To do, this please follow these steps. Click Start - Settings - Control panel and double-click System. On the Device Manager tab, click system devices, double click PCI Bus and then click to clear the use IRQ Steering check box on the IRQ Steering tab. Click ok and restart the computer.

The next option is to disable the NVRAM/ESCD updates feature. To do this, please follow these steps. Go to, Start - Settings - Control Panel - double-click System - Device Manager tab - double-click System Devices. Click Plug and Play BIOS and then click to select the Disable NVRAM/ESCD updates check box on the settings tab. Click ok and then restart your computer. After you restart the computer try and shut it down again. If you have an antivirus program that is configured to scan your floppy disk drive when you shut down your computer, your computer may stop responding. So check whether you have enabled this option. If the shutdown problem still persists, please look up Microsoft's article titled Problems Shutting Down Windows 98 Second Edition - Q238096 at the following URL: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb; EN-US;238096.

For installing the sound card, you will need information about your sound card such as its name, model, drivers etc. Please go through your sound card manual and sound card drivers CD. If your sound card is built-in with motherboard, then refer your motherboard manual and CD. If you do not have a sound card driver, you can download it from a manufacturer's Web site or through search engines such as www.google.com, www.yahoo.com etc.
