Both sides of the story

Sir,

This is with regard to the article Pouch play or plain poaching by Bharat Kumar that appeared in eWorld dated August 9, 2004.

As CEO of a pure-play BPO that works with financial services, law firm, consulting and media companies, I have seen both sides of the competitive coin you discussed. IMS, on the one hand, has lost BPO contracts to some of the combined IT and ITES companies such as Infosys/Progeon, where the customer is already a significant customer for IT services, such as a large financial services institution.

But on the other hand, we have won contracts precisely because we are focused on providing specialist BPO services. The deciding criteria seem to me to be scale (if the BPO process under consideration is simpler or more generic in nature) or domain expertise (if the BPO process requires greater domain knowledge or specialisation).

Liam Brown

CEO, Integral Media Services
