Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off When virus plays hide-and-seek
I have a Pentium III system with 64 SD RAM and 20 GB hard disk, Windows NT 4.00 workstation as OS and also a Norton anti-virus corporate version with latest updated patch. When I scan my computer, it shows the following message: "No virus found". But when I am connected to the Internet, some times it displays the following message: "Norton Antivirus Notification Scantype: Realtime Protection Scan Event: Virus Found! Virus name: W32.HLLW.Gaobot File: c:\winnt\wintel.exe Location: Quarantine Computer: Sppl User: Administrator Action Taken: Clean failed: Quarantine Succeed: Access Denied Date Found: Thu Sep 09 11:25:38 2004 What does this mean? Please suggest a solution. Muni Krishna This is a worm that tries to copy itself over the network shares. Once a system is affected, it connects through IRC to enable remote machine to access files from the affected system. There are quite a lot of variants of this worm such as W32.HLLW.Gaobot.AA, W32.HLLW.Gaobot.AE and many more. You will have to know the correct variant to make the necessary system updates and also necessary registry entry deletions. The next time you see this message, please note down the exact name and then do the following. Go to the Symantec link http://www.symantec.com/search/ type in the virus name and search. Please click on one of the links in the search result and you will be provided with the virus information, and the patches to apply to avoid future attacks by the worm. The procedure to remove some registry entry will also be there which you will have to do to prevent the worm from running in your system. You can search for any virus using this search site provided by Symantec to get information and removal instructions.
