String of problems

I face the following problems while using my PC at home.

  • When removable disk (flash drive) is inserted, a window appears with a set of actions (play, open in new folder, take no action) to be performed along with a check box "Always do the same action."

If I select the action and click the checkbox, the dialog box mentioned above ought not to appear the next time around. But it appears each time even if I click the check box. What could be the reason for this?

More importantly, similar windows appear in many Windows applications. Where do these settings get stored or how do I change these settings later?

  • While copying files to flash drive, quite often I encounter this error; "There is not enough free space on disk."

When I go to Explorer, I find that this is not so. Also, there are no hidden files/folders. I am able to use the full space only when I format the drive. What could be the possible reason for this?

  • Disappearing window: I am using Norton antivirus. When I use the `live update' option for synchronising the data files, the live update window disappears after some time.

When I run live update once again, I get the message that the `session is already running.' How do I resolve this?

  • Is it possible to remove a particular item from the task bar when an application is running?

    Akbar

Regarding your first query, to find all these actions appearing when inserting your Flash Drive, CD or any removable media, please right-click on the respective drive and click on properties, then select the "AutoRun" tab.

There you will find two options, "Select an action to perform" and "Prompt me each time to choose an action". By default, you will have the second option enabled.

If you want to avoid the action list appearing every time a media is inserted, then you should select the first option and then select "Action" to perform when a media is inserted.

Different actions can be set for deferent types of contents. You will find a list of different categories of file types in a dropdown box.

Please select an action for each of these categories and click OK. If you end up messing up the setting, you can always click on the "Restore Defaults" button to normalise the settings.

You will have to repeat this for each `Removable Drive' that appears on your "My Computer."

If you have a flash drive and it is assigned a drive letter H:, then you will have to do this action on that drive too.

In case of the `Disk Full' problem in Flash Drive, it is mostly related to the use of FAT files system. The "Quick Removal" feature restricts the drive to the use of the FAT file system, bringing with it limitations such as 8.3 file names and 512 files in the root directory of a FAT volume.

Long file names take up more space, so the limit will be variable and lower.

However, you can reduce such problems by following some simple tips:

  • If you have a large number of files to copy, zip them up and copy them as a single file.

  • Do not put all the files in the root, organise them into folders to avoid the FAT 512 limit.

  • Please check that you have installed the right driver for your Flash Drive and USB Port as they do work with generic set of drivers but installing the exact drive is advisable as each manufacturer has their own way of handling memory allocations.

  • Preferably use the format utility given by the manufacturer to format the drive.

  • Stop the disk using "Safely Remove Hardware" and then unplug the device.

Regarding the Auto Update, this is normal behaviour. If your live update settings are set for automatic update, then the update program will run in the background and will update your definitions automatically.

And for killing running processes, you can always use the `Task Manager.'

However, if you are not able to kill the application with Task Manager, then you can use the pskill, which is a utility meant for killing running processes. You can download it from http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pskill.shtml

    Some help with

    CD copying

Is it possible to copy VCDs using a single CD RW drive? I tried copying (copy & paste) the VCD to HD and recopying in new disk (using Nero in data CD mode) but it did not work. Is it compulsory to have two drives, one reader and one writer?

    K.V. Subramanian

You can duplicate (Copy CD) the CD instead of copying and pasting it. You need not necessarily have two drives to do this. You can copy the entire source disk to an image.

This is how you do it. Please open Nero, go to the `Recorder' menu and click on `Choose Recorder.'

In the dialog box that appears, please select `Image Recorder.' Now insert the CD to be duplicated in the writer and start the Nero burn wizard and select `Copy CD.' Please complete the wizard and click on burn.

You will be asked for a location to store the image. Please specify a location. Once the copy is complete, remove the original CD.

Insert a blank CD-R into the writer, then go to the location where you stored the image and double click on it, and click burn.

    Trouble with CD

  • In CD Rewriter installed in CPU, after loading of CD in disc tray, the drive activity indicator goes on flashing for sometime, without displaying CD details. Please suggest a solution.

  • Whenever the PC is started, the task bar shows this message: `Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low.'

I use Windows XP, with other specifications being 128 DDR RAM, 40 GB, Pentium IV with 1.82 Ghz. There's more than 60 per cent space free in the C&D drives. Should I leave things as they are? If not, please suggest a solution.

Please use a lens cleaner CD to clean the lens and check out if this solves the problem. Otherwise you need to service the drive, the lens might require a replacement.

Regarding the "Low Virtual Memory" issue, you need not worry about it. Whenever Windows needs more virtual memory, it will automatically `Re-size' the `Page' file.

Only please make sure that you always have free space in the system partition, at least two times the size of the installed RAM.
