Installing modem driver

I am using a Compaq Presario 7500 series system. Recently, I switched to a D-Link motherboard after my Compaq motherboard developed problems.

Now I face a problem with the modem drivers. The Compaq Presario 7500 series uses a modem by name Compaq Presario conexant hcf v 90 56 k pci modem. Compaq Presario systems are provided with a CD named `Quick Restore' that takes care of a computer's needs. But the Quick Restore CD is not functional once the Compaq motherboard is replaced. So, now I do not have the software that makes my internal modem work. I tried to download software from the Compaq/HP site. But this has not worked out. What kind of software do I need to install, and where do I download it from?

My system's specifications are as follows: Compaq Presario 7500 series with Compaq Presario conexant hcf v 90 56 k pci modem. The operating system is Windows 98 Second Edition.

The `Quick Restore' CD that comes with the PC is a customised one. It will work only with the motherboard the system was shipped with, as it comes packed with drivers related to that specific board only. However, if you open `Restore CD', you will find a folder named `Drivers'.

You can look for your modem driver in this folder. You can just point this directory in the `Driver Upgrade' wizard and Windows will search and find the necessary files.

Here is how you do it: Please identify the CD that has the `Drivers' folder. Right-click on `My Computer', select Properties, and click the Device Manager tab. Click on the Modem node and select the modem installed (it might be marked in yellow if not installed properly).

Please click on the `Properties' button and click on the `Update Driver' button. In the wizard that appears, click next, and in the next screen you will be asked the location where Windows needs to search for the drivers.

Please select the CD check box and click next. Windows will try and find the necessary driver if any is present in the CD. You can also click on the `Browse' button in the wizard to point the Drivers directory. If a driver is found, Windows will replace the existing driver with this one, restart the PC and check the modem.

If the above procedure does not help, then you will need to manually download and install the Modem Driver from the Internet. Please go to the following site: http://www.hp.com/country/us/

en/support.html?pageDisplay=drivers

Select the "Download drivers and software" option and in the "for Product" text box type in "Compaq Presario 7500" and press enter. The next page will display a list of related models. Select your model and in the next page select the OS. You will find the modem drivers there. Select the HCF driver and also download and install a Fix which is listed there.

It should also be noted the you ought to have installed the D-Link motherboard INF updated to install the chipset drivers. You should have got the MB Driver CD and installed the INF updates from that.

Now, with these steps, if all goes well, you should not see any yellow marked items under the `Device Manager'.
