Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Virus trail
The anti-virus software in my system detected a virus in my system32 folder (XP) but could not repair it. So I deleted it. But now I find that I can't open up 16-bit applications such as Turbo c, Foxpro, or any software created in this environment. I get the following message when I try to do so: "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system is not suitable for running MS-DOS and MS Windows applications." Please suggest a solution. Richard Meyn The deleted Autoexec.nt file can be recovered from Windows XP installation CD. To do this, please follow these steps: Click Start - Run - type cmd and click ok. This will bring up the Command Prompt window. The syntax to expand the autoexec.nt file is Expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. Please change the CD-ROM Drive Letter accordingly. For example, if your CD-ROM drive letter is e: then type the above syntax at command prompt as Expand e:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. Now restart your system and check whether your 16-bit application works correctly. If the problem persists, open Notepad and type the following entries. @echo off lh% SYSTEMROOT\%stem32\mscdexnt.exe lh This solves your problem.
