Trouble after firefox installation

Recently I installed Mozilla Firefox 0.96 version browser on my system, which has Windows 98 SE as the operating system. The browser works but I face some problems: These are:

  • Firefox takes much time to open a blank page.

  • When I click to open on any .HTM or .URL file, it shows the following message: Program Not Found. Windows cannot find FIREFOX.HWD. This program is needed for opening files of type `URL : HypeText Transfer protocol': Location of "firefox.hwd"

If I click cancel, it displays another message stating that access to the specified device, path or file is denied.

  • How can I share the History folder for both IE and Firefox. (I am unable to access the offline content viewed in IE through firefox . I have imported all the bookmarks, history and everything through wizard.) I have taken steps to overcome this problem by running SFC (System file checker) and Registry mechanic but the problem persists. Please suggest a solution.

It looks like your FireFox installation has got corrupt for some reason. You will need to uninstall and reinstall FireFox to solve the problem. When you re-install, please do it with version 1.0. A lot of bugs have been fixed in 1.0. You can download it from http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/,

Before uninstalling, you will need to take a backup of your FireFox user data which you should find at Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox and copy it back after re-installation. Regarding the offline contents of IE, you cannot use the IE offline contents with FireFox, you can only import the Cookies, Internet Options, History, Favorite, Saved Passwords and From Histories.

    Worm havoc

Whenever I start programs using the startup icon in Windows 98, I get this message "Windows cannot find windbg.exe." Why does this happen? Please suggest a solution.

This seems to be trouble caused by a worm. WindDbg.exe is a Windows Debugging utility. It works with Windows NT Versions only and is not meant for Windows 98. In your case, the worm has used this program's name to copy itself and install itself as the service. If you have an antivirus software update, please run it in safe mode. If that doesn't solve your problem, you will have to resort to manually removing the registry entries related to this worm. Here is the list of registry entries that you will have to delete:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\

    Windows Debugger = "windbg.exe"

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\

    Windows Debugger = "windbg.exe"

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\

    Windows Debugger = "windbg.exe"

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\

    Windows Debugger = "windbg.exe"

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\

    Windows Debugger = "windbg.exe"

Start the system in safe mode, click Start -{gt} run type in regedit and in the editor, navigate to the above five entries one by one and delete the value "Windows Debugger." Restart the system. You can use the MsConifg.exe utility to remove the startup entries referring to winddbg.exe by typing msconfig at Start -{gt} Run, selecting the startup tab, and unchecking the check box next to the line containing a reference to windbg.

    Error message

My operating system is Windows XP Professional and I use the Tata Indicom dial - up Internet connection. Within a few minutes of my getting connected, an automatic message pops up "This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM LSASS.EXE." It calls it an RPC call Error, which eventually restarts my system. The problem has cropped up after I switched my operating system to XP. Please suggest a solution.

This problem is caused by the sasser worm. If possible, install Windows XP service pack 2 (size 266MB). This contains the latest security updates, which will solve your sasser worm problem. If it doesn't, you can install Microsoft security patch 835732 for the sasser worm. This can be downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/ bulletin/ms04-011.mspx. Please click the `Download the update' link of your corresponding operating system. For Windows XP, the security patch size is 2.58MB. After service pack 2 or patch is installed, you need to run a Sasser worm removal tool. You may download this at the following Symantec URL:

    http://securityresponse.symantec.com

    /avcenter/FxSasser.exe (Size 148KB).

For more details, please refer http://www.microsoft.com/
