Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Trouble accessing https site
I use Windows XP home edition on my PC. I am able to open www and http Web pages without any problem. However, https sites do not open. What could be the reason for the problem? Please suggest a solution. Ramgopal HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer, or HTTP over SSL) is a Web protocol built into the browser that encrypts and decrypts user page requests as well as the pages that are returned by the Web server. If you cannot access https Web sites, you have to enable the SSL protocol in your Web browser. To do this, please open your Internet explorer and click Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab. Under Security, select the check boxes of Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 and click ok. Now clear your browser cache files. To do this, open IE and click Tools - Internet Options - click Delete Cookies and Delete Files. Click the check box of `Delete all offline content' and click ok and ok. Now check if your https site opens. If you are using any personal firewalls such as windows ICF, Zone Labs or Sygate personal Firewall, temporarily disable it and check. Since https uses port 443 instead of http port 80, the firewall may block your https port. The next option is you may reset a dll file (softpub.dll) required to view secure Web sites. To do this, please click Start - Run - type "regsvr32 softpub.dll" (without quotes) and click ok. A pop-up should display the message "DllRegister Server in softpub.dll Succeeded". Click ok. Now check whether your https site opens. The last option is either to upgrade your Internet Explorer to the latest or try any other Web browser. One of free browsers available is Mozilla Firefox 1.0.2 (Size is 4.6MB) that can be downloaded at http://www.download.com/ 3000-2356_4-10208565.html
