Booting advice

My motherboard is Intel 915 GAV and the processor is 3 Ghz HT with 1-MB cache.

The motherboard has got only one Parallel IDE connector and it is used for my CD drive as well as CD writer. I have loaded Windows 98 SE on C: drive.

It runs without any drivers and inf files. How do I run Win 98 on this board? Please suggest a solution.

Sanjay

I want a multiboot platform by installing Windows 98 and Windows XP on a SATA hard disk. I have heard of instances where users have had problems installing Windows 98 on a SATA harddisk.

How can I fdisk, partition and clean install Windows 98 on SATA? Is there anything special about this? Please explain.

Intel has stopped support for Windows 98 from its 915 series of boards, so there is no way you will get an inf update from Intel. But one of the third-party sites provides drivers for 915 series motherboard, although you will have to test it out for its functionality.

This can be downloaded from the following URL: http://download.sapphiretech.com/

DRIVER/motherboard/utility/inteldrv.htm.

To work around this problem, the board uses Realtek ALC860 audio codec and Intel GMA900 onboard graphics, which means you can force-install similar drivers for these chips, which came with some 865 and 845 boards. However, this is not advisable.

Regarding multiboot on SATA, whether it is SATA or PATA makes no difference as long as there is a storage medium available, irrespective of through what interface it is available. So Win 98 OS or the fdisk will not see any difference at that level.

However, the problems experienced by such users is not because of SATA but because of the fact that inf and drivers updates are not available for the board providing the SATA interface (Intel 915 and 925).
