Letters Building awareness
Sir, This is with regard to the `Wait a sec' article that appeared in eWorld dated May 9, 2005. (The reporter had said a magnetic tag attached to her imported trousers, of which she was unaware, ruined her shopping experience and that she was put to much trouble to prove that she was not a shoplifter.) I fail to understand why one should go to such an extent to prove oneself. If I am honest, well I am. I need not panic in such a situation. Hangekar C.N. Pune Dear reader, Thank you for writing to us. Our reporter replies: "It was not panic so much as anger at the way the situation was handled without sensitivity. As journalists, we are taught to be curious about things and constantly look for reasons, causes, effects. In this instance, I was keen to know exactly what was happening. Interestingly, a friend of mine, who recently came down from Los Angeles, also faced a similar experience in a Pune mall. She, however, knew what was happening (having read the eWorld account) and took charge of the situation. As such, magnetic tags sounding alarms seems to be something happening frequently when people wear imported clothes. Stores need to make their security staff aware of the existence of such devices." We hope such reports will spread more awareness.
