Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Unable to browse Internet
I have a 1.5 GHz computer with 256 MB RAM and 40 GB HDD. I have an internal 56 Kbps Data/Fax/Voice Modem (Dial-Up Connection). I have Windows XP Professional SP1 and use Internet Explorer 6, and sometimes Mozilla Firefox 1.0 to browse the Net. The problem I face is that whenever I connect to the Internet, within a few minutes of browsing, it shows the message `Generic Host Processes for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.' Moreover, if I try to disconnect from the Internet by right-clicking the dial-up icon in the taskbar, the computer ceases to respond and even Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work. The only option I have left is to reach for the power button and turn the system off. I have a fully updated anti-virus tool and Ad-Aware SE Professional 1.05. I have done system scans using both but neither has detected anything. Please suggest a solution. Shashank Kedia As a first step, please unplug any printer or scanner you have installed and then see if this resolves the problem. If this step resolves the issue, then it simply means that you need to update your printer driver software. You can refer to your printer manufacture's Web site for the latest update of drivers. Also, please look at the following site which has more details on this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;821690 . Installing SP2 will be a good idea as it has quite a lot of fix, and has also has resolved some RPC-related vulnerability and might help in resolving the problem. It is also advisable to have an "Auto Protect" Spy-ware blocker like MS AntiSpyware. For more details, please refer to our tipoff column in eWorld dated June 20, 2005: "Say no to pop-ups, spyware and adware" at this URL: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/bline/ew/2005/06/20/stories/2005062000280400.htm
