Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Safety tips
Please explain in detail what precautions one needs to take while downloading games from Internet sites to one's computer, either directly or from a broadband connection, say from a Reliance Webworld. Will it be safe to install a game after scanning the downloaded file using the latest Norton antivirus programme? T.A. Joseph It is always advisable not to download anything from an unknown site. Also, just scanning for virus in not enough. What about spywares, vulnerabilities, and other such factors? You need to also have some spyware protection software such as MS anti spyware, which automatically detects spyware intrusion at the time of attack itself. Please refer to our earlier tip-off article at: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/bline/ew/2005/06/20/stories/2005062000280400.htm. Additionally, have your system up-to-date with the latest patches released by Microsoft. Whenever Microsoft comes to know about bugs and holes in its Windows software which might lead to problems such as intrusion, bugs and security holes, it releases updated versions of its internal program components driving the windows OS to patch up these bugs and holes. These patches come as a pack called as Service Pack or simply SP. If you have Windows XP, then you need to update to the latest SP2 and if it is Windows 2000, you need to update it to SP4. Windows 98 is no longer supported by MS, so no updates are available for it. But not to worry. Hackers have tired of hacking Win 95/98 and have turned to XP/2000. XP users, for a free copy of XP SP2, please refer to our article at http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/ew/2005/05/23/stories/2005052300220400.htm
