Virus threat

My system has been plagued by the virus speedy AVG. Norton has not been able to offer a solution. Despite my deleting the entries in MSCONFIG - Windows, Win.ini and HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current\version\run, virus files such as Alevir, Speedy, Pota, Banda etc., appear on the program files-windows folder. Please suggest a permanent solution for this. Could you tell me from where these entries are triggered and how I can safeguard Windows Folder from these virus entries? My system is Win 98 SE with PIV, 1.8 Ghz/40GB being the other specifications.

There is share level access security vulnerability in systems running Windows 95/98/98SE that has been addressed in security bulletin MS00-072 (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS00-072.mspx) released by Microsoft.

The speed worm basically exploits this vulnerability and spreads across the network.

You will need to download and install a patch to rectify this vulnerability and prevent the worm from re-entering your system.

You can download the patch for Win98SE directly from http://download.microsoft.com/

download/win98SE/Update/

11958/W98/EN-US/273991

USA8.EXE.

After installing the patch, please remove your system from the network and scan the system with Norton. Please ensure that your Norton definition updates are the latest.

If you have shared folders, remove the share and re-enable them, if required, after the patch update and NAV scan.

If you want to know more about the worm, please refer to the following Symantec URL http://securityresponse.
