Enabling auto update

I recently upgraded my OS from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. But in the security centre of the Control Panel, except Automatic Updates, all other options are marked `on'. When I tried to have the Automatic Updates marked on, the system displayed this message: "The security centre could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to system in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), then click OK."

I tried this option too but it didn't help. I have updated the Service Pack 1 to 2 directly from the Microsoft Web site. I have been using a broadband connection from BSNL since February. From last month, I have been working with a dial-up connection. But my modem connection has been made a direct connection, i.e when my modem is on and if I open IE, I can browse directly. But the problem is that the Web page is displayed only when I disable and enable my Local Area Network connection or I have to wait for nearly 15-20 minutes to get the Web page. Please suggest a solution.

Please do the following: Click on Start -{gt} Run and type in each of these lines one by one and press enter,

net.exe stop wuauserv

regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll

regsvr32 /s wups.dll

regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll

regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll

regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll

regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

regsvr32 /s jscript.dll

regsvr32 /s atl.dll

regsvr32 /s softpub.dll

regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

Once this process is over, restart the system and enable Auto Update. You can download the critical updates from update.microsoft.com. Apply all the critical updates and enable the Window Firewall in the control panel.
