Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off RAM-induced problem
I am using a P4 system, with Win XP Professional as the operating system, and with 40 GB HD. I have Encarta Microsoft Encyclopaedia software. When I purchased the PC, my RAM was 128 MB. But a few months ago, when I checked it out, it was only 96 MB RAM. The problem is that whenever I start to browse the software, it restarts automatically. Why does this happen? Please suggest a solution. Tushar. K This seems to be a problem concerned with the RAM. If you have experienced the same problem of the system restarting when using other applications or system resources, then the first thing you will need to do is try and replace the RAM with a spare one. Or else, if your 128 MB or RAM happens to be in two modules, 64 + 64, then try running the system with just one module at a time to find out which RAM module is giving trouble. If your RAM is a single module, you can try cleaning the RAM's copper tracks with a soft cloth, because the copper contact of the RAM might be rusty, preventing a good contact with the memory slot. Microsoft Online Crash Analysis has released a tool using which you can check your RAM for errors. You can download the utility at http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp Please download the tool and run it. It will prompt you to write a boot disk or CD image, insert a floppy disk and create a startup disk, boot the system with the disk and follow the instructions on the screen. Also, please refer to our article on RAM at http://www.blonnet.com/ ew/2002/12/04/stories/ 2002120400080402.htm
