Removing virus program

My PC has Windows 98 as the operating system. The problem I face is that when I Start-{gt}Run-{gt}regedit window, it does not open normally. It appears briefly, blinks and then disappears. Please suggest a solution.

This is virus activity. The virus program will not allow you to open your registry or your msconfig utility so as to prevent you from removing its related entries from the system.

You can, however, boot into safe mode and open the registry editor. Please update your anti-virus definition and scan the system in safe mode.

At times, the virus will not even allow your system to access anti-virus sites or connect to live update servers by entering invalid and redirecting entries in your system `Host' file. You need to open the Host file in a notepad and delete all the unwanted entries in it. You will find the Host file at c:\windows\

A normal Host file will have some 15 - 17 lines starting with the "#" symbol, and a line reading "127.0.0.1 localhost"

All the lines below this can be deleted. Once this is done, you can update your anti-virus definition and then run a full system scan in safe mode.
