A sharp eye out

Preeti J

McAfee has unveiled security products that can, it says, help you stay ahead of the threat.

MCAFEE INC, known principally for anti-virus software, has announced the latest versions of its range for the next year: VirusScan, Personal Firewall Plus, AntiSpyware, SpamKiller, Privacy Service and QuickClean

These products offer `dats', or daily updates on recently discovered threats. This was previously done on a weekly basis.

The SpamKiller software is now pro-active in nature. It identifies and blocks potential `phishing' web sites and scams before the user can enter sensitive financial data. Phishing is a notorious security scam that uses e-mail to trick users into divulging important information.

SpamKiller installs as a plug-in on your browser (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera, etc) and notifies users with a pop-up window when they are about to visit a known or suspected `phishing' Web site.

"Considering that 80 per cent of users have spyware on their computers, ranging from tracking cookies to browser hijackers, we felt the need to introduce automatic spyware detection," says Monica Kelly, Consumer Business Manager for Asia-Pacific, McAfee Australia. "Other security products allow spyware to download before attempting any action."

With automatic spyware detection, any program that can jeopardise your privacy and identity, and reduce your PC's performance, is blocked.

Another interesting feature incorporated in the security products for next year is the gaming suspend mode. Apparently, this has been done as a result of feedback from online gaming communities.

Obviously nobody wanted benign alarms popping up while they were all set to conquer a civilisation or defeat the enemy. This feature automatically detects whenever you are in `Full Screen' mode and suppresses firewall pop-up messages.
