Configuring OE with gmail

I have configured my Outlook Express with gmail, as advised by you in the Tip-Off column, but when I send/receive, it says "your pop3 server has not responded in 60 seconds, would you like to wait for another 60 seconds.." Please suggest a solution.

Kanchan K.R.

Please check the following settings: Open Outlook Express and click Tools - Accounts - Mail tab - select your gmail account (pop.gmail.com) and click properties - Advanced tab. Now make sure the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box has port number "465 " (without quotes) and Incoming mail (POP3) box has port number "995" and tick the option "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" under both Outgoing and Incoming mail.

The next important step to do is, under `Server Timeouts', drag the slider bar until the display reads 5 minutes (drag to end). Hope this solves your problem.

If the problem still persists, please login to your gmail Web account by using any Web browser such as Internet Explorer and follow the steps. For testing purpose, keep fewer number of mails in your gmail inbox. If the inbox contains lots of mails and you feel all are important, then select the option "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on".

To do this, please click the "Settings" link at the top right corner that will show the "Mail settings" for your account. Click the fourth link "Forwarding and POP." Here you can the select "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on" option. Now send one or two mails to your gmail account and check in Outlook Express. At times, this error message may be triggered under some circumstances. It is likely you have a large e-mail blocking your e-mail account. Also, it depends on the Internet connecting bandwidth. Please check your system on whether it has up-to-date Definition files of Anti-virus and Anti-spyware products.
