Disabling PXE boot

I have a PC with the following configuration: P-IV 1.7 GHz, ASUS: P4S533-VM/SA-UAY motherboard, 256 MB RAM and 40 GB Baracudda Seagate HDD. I have installed XP-pro SP1 in it. I connect to the Internet by a cable service from a local provider. My cable operator installed an Intex LAN Card for the connection.

I wanted a LAN card of my own, so I bought an Intel LAN card and asked the same person to install it.

Earlier, with the old card, the network seemed to be slow when I compared it to other users. The Intel Card is doing fine but whenever I start my PC after checking all hardware devices, I get an error but the PC boots normally after a few seconds.

The error Message is: "error: PXE-MO4 hooking bootstrap interupt 18h...."

Do I need to update my BIOS since the LAN card is new? Please suggest a solution.

Muralidhar V

PXE stands for Pre-Boot Execution Environment, pronounced pixie. The "PXE-MO4" is an option to boot from a network connection or a network drive.

A PXE-enabled workstation connects its NIC (LAN Card) to the LAN via a jumper, which keeps the workstation connected to the network even when the power is switched off.

Because a network administrator does not have to physically visit the specific workstation and manually boot it, OS and other software, such as diagnostic programs, can be loaded onto the device from a server over the network.

The error message that you mention will not create any harm and a BIOS update is also not necessary. Just make a change in the BIOS to disable the PXE option. For this, in the `Boot Device Priority,' please disable the `boot from Network device' option.
