Ripping a CD

Please tell me the difference between `ripping' a CD and saving it just like another file. The `rip' option is found in `windows media player'.

Chetan Kumar

Ripping is basically reading the digital data from an audio CD and then writing it on to a file either a .wav, .mp3, .wma or any file format.

You cannot copy an audio CD as you would copy a data CD or a video CD as the music in an audio CD is not stored in the computer file system format but rather in a CD Digital Audio (CD-DA) system.

So when you open an audio CD in your PC, what you will see is only the track information of each song and not the whole song as a file. The ripper software reads or grabs the audio data in the CD and stores it in a file format recognised by your PC file system.
