Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Wi-Fi connection for laptop
I have a laptop, an IBM ThinkPad, model G40 type 2389. I am operating it using a Dishnet dial-up connection. I have gone in for a BSNL Dataone broadband connection at home for my PC. The modem supplied by BSNL is a Type II modem, which has a Wi-Fi antenna. Please tell me what attachment I need to make my laptop Wi-Fi-enabled. The Wi-Fi modem supplied by BSNL is a Wireless ADSL Router Quidway WA 1003A series. K.N. Viswanathan You need to purchase an access card, which in this case is a PCMCIA card, offering Wi-Fi. You need to plug it into any of your PCMCIA slots and your laptop will become Wi-Fi-enabled. One other way is to buy a USB-Wi-Fi dongle, and plug it into one of your USB ports to make your laptop Wi-Fi-enabled. Once this is done, your BSNL Wi-Fi modem will be listed as one of the available networks. You can connect to it and start browsing. Browser trouble I am using a system with these specifications: P4, 512 MB RAM and 80GB HDD and OS Win 98 SE. I also have a virus scanner, AVG Free, and spyware detectors Adaware SE and a2. I am regularly checking for Malwares and Virues and updating the Application Files regularly. I am using this system mainly for Online Trading. Of late, there is some delay in getting another site after closing the previous one. Sometimes the application hangs while opening or closing. In order to avoid some programs in startup, I tried to open MSCONFIG.EXE, but the system says that file is not seen. Other persons in the house also have access to this system. I want to password-protect the system so others cannot access it. Please tell me how I go about this. Also, how do I track the Msconfig.exe file? I do not have the CD/FDD of Win 98 SE.
Kunhalan Please clear the temporary Internet files of your browser. To do this, open Internet Explorer, go to Tools -{gt} Internet Options. Under the General tab, please click on Delete Files. In the dialog box that pops up, check the "Delete all offline contents" and click ok. If you have installed any Internet tool bars, try disabling them. To do this, please open Internet Explorer, go to Tools -{gt} Manage Add-ons, select the Add-ons you want to disable and click on the Disable radio button at the bottom of the dialog box. Repeat this process for all the add-ons you want to disable and click ok. Close all the browser windows, open Internet Explorer and see if your browsing is better. As for the missing msconfig.exe tool, you can download it from http://www.perfectdrivers.com/local/msconfig.exe , Please download and copy it into the Windows directory. Regarding controlling access to your PC, you can put a BIOS password so that whenever the system starts, you need to enter the BIOS password to boot the system. You can do this in the BIOS under the Security tab. You can access the BIOS usually by pressing any of the Del, F1 or F2 keys. Please look up http://www.lockdown.co.uk/?pg=biospsw&s=articles for a graphical representation.
