Hardware Columns - Come Again! All pumped up!
Thumb-drives or Pen-drives that connect to computers through the USB interface are a fairly common sight these days. But many people have a problem figuring out exactly how much space they have left in these drives to copy more files. Unfortunately, you can't tell how much free space is left till you connect the drive to a computer and check for free space. And figuring out the free space is very useful when you want to copy some large files - documents or spreadsheets or presentations or even music - quickly from a friend's or a colleague's computer. The solution? Flashbag (http://www.plusminus.ru/flashbag.html). The device contains a very small pump along with the memory. When data is transferred into the drive, the pump also works and pumps air into the device, thus bloating it up. When data is deleted, the pump lets out some of the air and deflates the device. The device remains pumped up even when it is switched off or not connected to a computer, so you can always tell whether you have enough free space for that rare music album by just looking at the drive. The catch? The product is only a design concept and the designer is hoping to get a production partner.
