Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Connecting to the Net
My computer is on a LAN connection. When I want to connect to the Internet, I need to reset the settings to a particular http proxy with an IP address and a specific port number.I also require to feed in a specific username and password. In my previous job, at that workspot, when I connected to the Internet, this was not required and I would just plug in to get online. Now I cannot access any messenger or mail client such as Thunderbird. Why is this so? Please explain. Pushy Chau
Previously you would have had direct Internet access. With direct Internet access, there is no need to type a username and password. Now, that would have been changed through a proxy server. For getting authenticated in the proxy server, a valid username and password are required. Whenever you type a URL for Internet connection, the browser sends this information to the proxy server. The proxy server has an Internet connection. It will allow your request for the site as per the rule defined in the proxy server. If access to that site is not restricted, the page gets displayed. The reason for your not being able to access any messenger or the mail client is that this is not permitted in the proxy server.
