Excelling at work

Make your own pattern. - M. MOORTHY

If you are one of those unfortunate ones who has to stare at spreadsheets and accounts all day long and the only entertainment you have is to play the easter egg in Excel, you might want to do something other than play a goal-less game.

You might want to vent your throttled creative energy on something that produces aesthetic results but uses things that you are familiar with.

Enter Danielle Aubert's idea of using the Excel spreadsheet program to create art. Danielle is going to bring out a book of her Excel art this summer, and will also be exhibiting the drawings at The Gallery Project in Ann Arbor, Michigan, US.

Each drawing looks painstakingly crafted, and brings to mind some of those huge cross-stitch landscapes that Mothers in an earlier generation were occupied with.

The art works are made by changing the cell preferences and the formatting - such as background colour and shading - of the different cells making up the patterns. The drawings encompass various themes - abstract, geometric patterns and landscapes. Check out http://www.danielleaubert.com/main_print.html, where you will find information about the book as well as the artwork.

As for the easter egg in Excel, check out http://www.blonnet.com/life/2002/04/08/stories/2002040800230100.htm to find out more.

Now, are there any ideas for using Word, PowerPoint or Outlook to make art?
