Striking a chord

Azer, the sitarist.

When the compere announced a short music recital before the actual inaugural session of SemiTech Taipei 2006 began, the Indians in the crowd must have been pleasantly surprised by the similarities with Indian culture - having a musical invocation before the day's programme.

When four drummers, with different looking drums, occupied their places on the dais, things looked normal enough. And then slipped in the sitarist into the far left corner of the stage, almost inconspicuous!

Looking at ease with himself and with his instrument, Azer played the perfect accompanist to the drummers. His was the sole string instrument to the four percussionists. eWorld caught up with the group later. Azer, originally from Tibet but now in Taiwan, visited India last year for a period of three months. "I learnt with four gurus. After daily sessions with them, I used to practise for about five hours daily. This was in Varanasi."

He later went to New Delhi to learn from a fifth guru, who was a student of the sitar himself. Surprised at the limited time of three months that he spent here? Ask him if he knew to play the sitar or a similar instrument before his India visit and he replies, simply, `No.' Then how this felicity with the sitar? "I used to listen to CDs when I was younger, got interested and pursued it." He says he was roped into the troupe, Rhythm Nation (which performed at the inaugural session) because it was looking for artists to help perform Fusion recitals.
