Empty Device manager

I recently noticed that my device manager is empty. It does not detect my internal modem or allow me to install USB devices like a bluetooth adapter.

I tried different options as described on the Microsoft Web site to change the plug-and-play settings.

I also checked the security permission under `ENUM'. I am using XP service pack 2 with updates. I am also using the latest Norton Internet security 2006 version and have searched for viruses both in the normal and safe mode. Couldn't find any spyware either. As I have a lot of data on my system I do not want to use my XP CD for recovery, as the system is an upgraded version to SP2 by download. Can you suggest some other options?

First, set the start-up type for plug and play to Automatic. To do so, please click Start - Run - type "Services.msc" and click ok. This will invoke services window. Scroll down and double click "Plug and Play". Make sure the "Startup type" list shows "Automatic". If not, click "Automatic" and click ok. Close services window and restart the computer. ("Universal Plug and Play Device host" is different and by default it should not be Automatic). Check whether this solves your problem.

The problem may be due to some mal-wares. For troubleshooting, visit http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe (Size 228KB). Download aproposfix.exe and save the file to your system. Restart your computer and enter Safe Mode by pressing F8 on the keyboard repeatedly after your BIOS loads. Login as "administrator" or an account with administrator privileges. Double click on aproposfix.exe and extract the files to your system. Open the folder and double click on "Run This.bat" and follow the instructions. Restart the computer once you are prompted. Check to see if your problem has been solved.

If you still face the problem, you may download and run the following two files one by one.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/devicemanagerrestore.reg. To use the reg file, double click the reg file and answer yes to the prompt.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/devicesall.vbs. To use the vbs file, double click the vbs file.
