Error message

My system's configuration is Intel P4, 1.6 Ghz, 512 MB RAM and 40GB hard disk. Windows 2000 Professional has been installed and I'm using AVG 7.0 anti-virus updated version. Recently, all of a sudden, my system got stuck. I tried restarting but the system will not boot up. The following error message is displayed on the screen: "Windows 2000 could not start because <108,SYM,37>systemroot<108,SYM,37>\SYSTEM32\ CONFIG\SYSTEMced is missing or corrupt." I have installed a lot of applications and games in my system. I'm not in a position to format it. Please suggest a solution.

This problem may happen due to the system hive in the registry being damaged or going missing. This message typically results from the System registry hive being too large for the OS to load. For Intel-based systems, the initial stage of the boot process is limited to 16 MB of available memory. During this phase of the boot process, the system must load the Loader, Kernel, HAL, Boot drivers, System registry hive. If the System registry hive exceeds 13MB, an error can occur, resulting in the error message above. The System registry hive is meant to store only information that the OS needs to start the machine.

To resolve this error, you must replace the existing System registry hive with a smaller backup version. To do this, please do the following: Boot your system with Windows 2000 professional setup (installation) CD. When you see the `Welcome to Setup' message, press R for `repair'. Next press C to start the Recovery console. Select the installation you wish to repair and enter the administrator password. Now type the following commands:

cd system32\config

ren system system.old

ren system.alt systemalt.old

You need to restore the most recent copy of the System hive. Copy the most recent of <108,SYM,37>systemroot<108,SYM,37> \repair\regback\system or <108,SYM,37>systemroot<108,SYM,37>\repair\system to the current folder(<108,SYM,37>systemroot<108,SYM,37>\system32\ config).

copy c:\winnt\repair\regback\system c:\ winnt\ system32\config (or) copy c:\winnt\repair\ system c:\winnt\system32\config.Type "exit" to exit the recovery console. Please note that you also need to reinstall any hardware device drivers or programs that run as services that you installed since the date of this system hive.
