Letters Tackling a thin middle
Sir, This is with regard to the cover story, `Missing the Middle', by Abhinav Ramnarayan, in eWorld dated July 10, 2006. The article is interesting and covers a wide range of issues. As a middle manager in a PSU, I would like to share a few things with you. The drain in the middle management levels in IT and other companies is due to the age factor. In PSUs, one can reach the middle level only in the 35-40 age range. But in IT, it is 30 to 32. The age of 30 is not the right age for elevation to middle level since such professionals might not have exposure or any practical experience in facing various situations. The second is salary. Mis-match in salary across companies - for the same cadre - poses a problem, with frequent exodus of manpower from one company to another. Though the perspective of the article is broad, unless the above issues are addressed, we will not be able to tackle the thin middle.
