Telecommunications Columns - Come Again! Is it rude or not?
When the mobile cuts into another conversation. - MURALI KUMAR K.
You are talking to a friend, having an interesting conversation, perhaps reminiscing about that trick you pulled on your B-school professor when you were on a class trip. Suddenly, this `friend' whips out his phone and starts talking. Maybe he'd apologise when he's done but you are in no mood to continue the conversation. Even worse: you are in a gang, maybe sipping your preferred poison, and one of the gang puts a red-hot phone to his ear and just runs away from the table. If you consider this as rude behaviour, you are not alone. But you don't consider it rude when you are the one who's running because of "an important call from the Boss!", do you? So, how can you manage that? Well, there's a way: you could use something like the CellBooth (http://jennylc.com/cellbooth/). It is a pack-and-carry booth to use when you need the privacy and space to make or take a call on your cell-phone. Now the problem is bigger: Is setting up such a booth less rude or more rude that just whipping out your phone and playing hide and seek? Less, because you have made your intentions clear. More, because you are still neglecting your friends. But one thing will make us very happy: we could always get into one of these plastic tents when the boss is looking for volunteers!
