Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Trouble loading Java applets
I am using a PC with Win 98 installed. Subsequently, I formatted and installed Windows XP and Service Pack 2. After the installation, I am unable to get Stock Tickers applets and Dynamic Graph from the following URL: http://www.nseindia.com Other sites are working all right. The same problem continues in PCs installed with Win XP for the first time with the same installation CD. Please suggest a solution. S. Srinivasan
To get rid of this problem, please take the following steps, one by one. If you have installed any third-party personal firewall (such as Zone Alarms, Sygate, etc) or the "Windows firewall" in Windows XP, temporarily turn it off (disable) and check whether you have got the Stock Tickers applets loaded. To disable windows firewall, please click Start - Run - type "firewall.cpl" and click ok. On the General tab, Click "Off (not recommended)" check box and click ok. Open IE - Click Tools menu - Internet Options - Advanced tab - Scroll down to the Security Section - make sure you have enabled (tick) the option "Allow active content to run in files on My Computer". This is one of the Windows XP SP2 security settings. The most likely reason for this behaviour is that you do not have Java installed on your computer. If Java is not installed, install the latest sun Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 9. You can download this from the following URL:http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp. Click the "Download" button of second "Windows (Offline Installation) Filesize 15.74 MB". Once the download is completed, double-click the jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p-s.exe file. If you get the security warning, click yes to install this file and follow the instructions. Once you have installed JRE software on your computer, you must restart your Internet Explorer and check whether the Stock Tickers applet loads properly. This solves your problem. If you are accessing the Internet through Proxy Server, then click Start - Settings - Control Panel. Double-click the Java (Java Control Panel) icon - In general tab, Click Network Settings button and provide the required proxy information. If you still face problems, please clear all temporary files and check again. Clear temp files, Temporary Internet Files and Java Cache files. First close all open applications, including Internet Explorer. To clear temp files, please click start - run - type " nd click ok. This will bring up the temp folder. Click Edit - Select All - and press Delete key. To clear Temporary Internet Files, open IE - Click Tools - Internet Options - General tab - click "Delete Cookies" and click ok and click "Delete Files" and tick the checkbox "Delete all offline content" and click ok. To clear java cache files, click Start - Settings - Control Panel - double click "java" icon - General tab - under Temporary Internet files section, click "Delete Files" button. Tick all the three check boxes (Download Applets, Download Applications and Other files) and click ok. If the problem still persists, first make sure you have Sun version of Java enabled. To check this, Open IE - Click Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab - Scroll down to the Java (sun) section and make sure you have enabled "Use Java 2 v(version number) for applet{gt}[requires restart]" option. Now check whether the applets are loaded. The second possibility is that you have both Microsoft's and Sun's versions of Java installed and enabled on your computer and they are conflicting with one another. Hence select only one version of Java to use. In Advanced tab, Scroll down to Microsoft VM section and remove (untick) the below 3 options and check now.
