Call me sentimental

Those were the times.- K. GOPINATHAN

I love to hear the pitter-patter of raindrops on my balding head. I keep going back to the day my father and I played with paper ships in the streams made by the monsoon rains. And whenever I am bursting with pride on doing something important, I visualise leaving a footprint in the sands of time, and turn immediately humble. Now, you can call me sentimental.

Duncan Wilson's Web site (http://www.duncan-wilson.com) has three projects that play on nostalgia and sentiment.

The Cup Communicator revisits the old cup telephone toy - two cups connected with a length of string - that we would use between two houses or across the terrace, though some of us may remember them with coconut shells rather than cups. But the cup communicator actually works: Wilson has used new technology with an old interface.

The Snowbench retains a "memory" of the shape of the last person who sat on it. It uses new material technologies - visco-elastic memory foam - to accomplish the sentimental effect of nostalgia.

The Madsounds/Otto project is a playful extension of the cliché "walls have ears", and aims to let us hear the sounds and music of daily life. Otto is a highly sensitive device that detects small tremors and vibrations on the surface on which it is placed and converts them into audible signals.

If you have been dawdling in the cafeteria thinking about these things, just make sure the chairs in the cafeteria don't tell your boss that you took two hours for your lunch!
