PCs and Macs

What is the difference between a regular PC and a Mac? Are the programs compatible and is it worth switching from PC to Mac?

Rufus Mathews

Macs and PCs operate differently. Mac, short for Macintosh, is from Apple Computer while several other companies, such as Dell, IBM, HP and Compaq, to name some, offer PCs. Nowadays, with knowledge of basic hardware configuration, one can assemble one's own PC, or, of course, go for a branded product.

But assembling a Mac is a difficult proposition unless you are familiar with its hardware.

Macs, one could say, are more stable, and seem to suffer from fewer virus attacks. A Mac uses the Mac OS whereas PCs use Microsoft's Windows and the like. Generally, most software and games are available for the PC and getting support for the PC is easier compared to the Mac.

If you are using graphics, animation, and software such as Photoshop intensively, a Mac could be a better option.

Not all programs and files work in a Mac. It depends on the type of files and programs one wants to use.

Mostly, software has a Mac version also. For instance, a PC uses WinZip to zip and unzip files.

But a Mac uses a different program for this task.

Thus, you see that both can use zip files, but in their own way.

Popular programs such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop have both Mac and PC versions.

If you use Microsoft Office on a PC, you can open and edit the files on a Mac running Microsoft Office.

Some functions are common to both - such as surfing the Net, downloading files, e-mailing, etc.

If you want a stable computing experience, a Mac is a good option.

If you want to only play games or use special software available only for PCs, then obviously, it's the PC for you.

Also, one factor that may weigh in the PC's favour is that it is less expensive than the Mac.

Whatever the common features and differences between the two, what is important is that one should choose between them depending on what one wants to do with his/her computer.
