A planner for the year - C.V. SUBRAHMANYAM

A happy new year to you! We have two items for you this week, both of which you can use all year long to achieve quite different results. But believe us, both are good for your body, mind and soul.

First up is the 2007 Information Esthetics calendar (http://informationesthetics.org/node/1) that you download as a PDF for free and print it out for yourself, or if you like a well-finished product, you could order one at the Web site.

The calendar, aptly titled "Once more around the sun", has the days and hours arranged in a circular format that allows you to spot conflicts very quickly. It is a day-, week-, month- and year-planner, all in one and packaged very neatly and usefully. You will be able to spot your weekday trends very easily, and perhaps alter schedules suitably. All in all, a great item to have to make the year more productive.

Next up is the solution to the cliché "All work and no play makes Jane/Jack a dull girl/boy": a fake progress bar. You are bound to have days when you'd just like to put your feet up on the desk and read a nice book, but you also have to be seen as working very hard.

The Fake Progress Bar (at http://www.digitalvolcano.co.uk/fakebar.html) will run for as long as you want showing some process/update/download that you can define according to your office's peculiar data handling protocols.

So, there you are: everything in balance - a little work, a little play, and some goofing off - for the year ahead!
